Social and Cultural Path


In-between str. Corinthou and Maizonos onGerokostopoyloy str. It is the central square of the city. πt is up today the square of the political and cultural events of the city, the location where the most important activities (national dances, outdoors concentrations) used to took place and point of meeting for Patras’ Carnival. It is characterized by the fountains, that embellish it from 1875 and the number of the surrounding cafι where you can enjoy a beverage and watch the daily life of the city taking place in front of you.

In Westwards of the Citadel, in the Old City, you can find the Roman Conservatory of Patras that was build earlier than the Conservatory of Athens (Irodeio, 160 A. D.). For lot of centuries it suffered wars, earthquakes, conquerors and was covered by earth and buildings. In 1889 it came back to light after certain work that was in development for the recreation of the harbour. In 1956 the recreation of the Ancient Conservatory was completed and took it’s initial form after lot of decades. The ancient Conservatory has the all basic parts of a theatre an can entertain 2. 300 specta7 tors. During the summer months, leading Greek and foreigner artistic groups are presented here and from the moment that the International Festival Patras was established, the Ancient Conservatory constitutes its basic place.

The construction of the Castle is placed in the second half of the 6th A. D. century. Up to 1828 it was used for the defence of the city. Today a part of Castle functions as a theatre, with capacity of 640 seats, in which take place each year, various cultural events.

The municipal theatre Apollo is an architectural decoration for Patras and it is exactly similar to the Scala of Milan. It is the older saved theatre in Greece and one of the theatres of opera and operetta in Europe. From 1998 it constitutes the permanent roof for the Regional Theatre of Patras. There, each year, are organized dances for Patras 8 Carnival and Mpourmpoulia.

Carnival Laboratory is the core and the fundamental force of Carnival. There, are manufactured and looked after chariots and decorative elements of carnival. Latest political and social status is sources of ideas for people that work there. Carnival Laboratory each year exceeds last year's self, creating unusual forms for chariots.

The new Archaeological Museum of Patras has been manufactured recently in a plot about 28. 500m2 in the northern entry of city between the old and new National Road. Because his imposing form, the new Museum will constitute point of report for his wider environment and at extension for the city of Patras. The new Museum (total accommodated surface 8. 000m2) is a cluster of semi-automatic buildings, and will accommodate exhibition spaces, amphitheatre, laboratories and every other required installation for the operation of a modern museum.

In the square of National Resistance you can find the Archaeological Museum of Patras, which is one from the more important archaeological museums of Greece. The building where it is accommodated, was donated in the State in 1938 from the family Karamandani. There, are exposed archaeological exhibits of hellenistic, classic, roman years, mosaics, earthen, alabaster vessels and sculptures from Patras and its province. The discoveries are dated from 3000 until 800 A. D.

The creation of a Museum that would concern the History and the Ethnology of Patras began from Yannis Meletopoylos, which had the idea and Theodoros Papanagiotoy materialized it. In the big room of the Museum the following are exposed: arms from 1770 and afterwards, painting of Palaion Patrwn Germanou (work of I. Friedel), martial flag of the 12th heroic constitution infantry, martial timetable and personal objects of general Mr Konstantinopoylos, various documents of the years 1819- 1824, big embossed table of oath in the Saintly Cloister and more. Finally (1992) the Museum was enriched with arms and other objects of 1821, that was donated by domestic collectors, for the enrichment of the 12 Museum and for keep.

It is accommodated in the building of the Union of Authors and functions from 1952. In his exhibits are included infrequent publications, historical value documents, magazines of Patras and from all over the Pelloponese as well as newspapers from 1875. One of the most important exhibits that are accommodated in the museum is the official document that was sent by the third National Assembly of the Greeks, undersigned from the all fighters, given to Ioannis Kapodistrias who was the first prime minister of Greece.

The museum of Popular Art belongs to the Cultural Centre of Patras. It’s Aim is the stocking of folklore material, the maintenance and the safeguarding, as well as the research, the study and it’s projection. The museum was founded in January 1977 and functioned the same year. This folklore material includes tools of rural life, furniture of agriculture residence and of daily use, means of transport as well as laboratories in which the treatment of rural products took place, the production of utilitarian objects and all kinds of hand made works. Finally there is a photographic file in which a recording of objects and works exist, a file that it includes material old but also new, of our architectural history.

The Congress and Cultural Centre of University of Patras, functions from 1999 and includes two big amphitheatres, with capacity of 1000 and 250 places and 10 parallel rooms, with capacity from 50 until 120 places. Congress and Cultural Centre aims to contributes in the better and more effective conduction of scientific and other congresses and meetings, as well as the further cultural growth of the city of Patras and the wider region of Western Greece. The ambition of University of Patras, is the Congress and Cultural Centre to constitute a pole of attraction and lever of growth of cultural life of region.

The factory of Art is manufactured using the last word of technology. It is a closed prefabricated theatre and it is located within limits in the open space of paper industry Ladopoulos. Its capacity is 900 seats.

Old Arsakeio is closely connected with the intellectual and cultural life of Patras. It had been founded in 1933, with the aim to accommodate the education for women population; it functioned as metropolis of education for the women who in that era, in their majority did not even study in High school. Today Old Arsakeio is a place which accommodates cultural events and in its smaller rooms often holds projections of exhibitions.

The building of Maragopoulou is placed in the contribution of Saint Andrea and Botsi street, and is a sample of industrial architecture of Interwar. After the restoration it will constitute a jewel for the city of Patras, which can be developed for commercial shops because the specifications when it was built were like the models of European commercial shops.

An other building designed with architecture of the Interwar, are the Mills of St. George, that reflect the economical, social and cultural course of Patras the last century. The last floor of building has been renewed and holds various exhibitions.

The first fortification of the castle of Rion was created in 1499 by Bogiazit the second. After many years it was under a lot of occupations and then in 1828 after a siege it was delivered to the Turks and their general Maizon. Today the castle of Rion hosts a lot of cultural events, concerts and theatrical presentations.


The bridge Rio-Antirrio was a far-reaching vision for the country, which had envisioned by the big politician Charilaos Trikoypis. The bridge was given in use in August 2004 and from then and on, serves thousands of citizens daily. It is one of the most important works that was constructed in Greece but also worldwide because of its particularity (wired - anti-earthquake).

“Politeia” is found on the Dymeon Coast, opposite of the manufacture of new harbour, a group with traditional stone buildings. “Politeia” is a group of buildings where the Old Slaughterhouses of Patras were accommodated from 1903. Today it has been extended from 3, 5 acres to 14, 5 acres and it has been completely renewed with important interventions, that, without degrading the traditional style, they supplement the voids of a space that appeared to have a manufacturing character and it constitutes a representative sample of the activity of old Patras. By the entry in the area, a travel in the past begins. Diffuse with romanticism, nostalgia and creativity, the environment has a particularity that nails someone. The particular architecture, the tasteful decoration and the harmonious coexistence of multiple outdoor and internal thematic rooms arouse the imagination and cause the a spirit of exploration. The expression “multi area of Art and Culture” are vindicated completely here. “Politeia” constitutes already a point of report and heart of culture of Patras for all ages.
